Throughout the day we have thousands and thousands of thoughts. Thoughts occur so frequently, one after the other, that the thought stream feels seemless. Throughout the day all kinds of thoughts; opinions, beliefs, judgments, criticisms, positions are constantly coming and going. All are impermanent but we become invested in them and believe they are who we are.
We don’t stop long enough to realize they are just ever-changing thoughts arising in awareness. The most constant thought is the thought that there is a “me having the thoughts”.
Everything that we identify as “me”; our identities, history, memory, beliefs, are simply thoughts in this thought stream. Most of our thoughts are focused on “me”. This thought of “me”, which is just another thought, is what creates this misconception that we are a separate person in time and space.
